How do my players challenge their classmates in Dreamscape?

What is the point of challenges?

The challenge is a carefully designed part of the gameplay. Players can challenge other dwells with their reveries. To the player challenging, it does look like the dwell is being destroyed and this is core to the strategy. Players are always trying to build the most defensible dwells and when they challenge, they are trying to train reveries that will be successful at challenging.

This is a very popular and key component of the game (and many other games kids play in this genre) because it motivates the players to play. There are some important things to note:

1. The player whose dwell is challenged does not see any of their buildings get knocked down/destroyed. As a player, your dwell always looks to be untouched. What you do see is that you have fewer shards because they have been collected by players who have challenged your dwell. This is an important aspect of the leaderboard and what keeps kids coming back.

2. There is a shield function built into the game so that the same player can not be challenged multiple times in a row. Students will get a 2-hour, 4-hour, or 6-hour shield after they are challenged depending on how much damage was done to their dwell. While they have a shield activated, they can't lose shards or resources. They can still be challenged through the friends' list, but now the student won't lose any shards if they lose the challenge. The student who initiated the challenge will still gain shards. However, if a student who is protected by an active shield goes on a challenge, they will lose their shield. The shield will also activate if a student had been challenged 3 times since the last time they played. This shield will remain active until the player logs in.

3. There are two ways to enter a challenge. Students can challenge a random player (where the system chooses the dwell you challenge from millions available) or they can challenge a friend through their menu tab.

4. Ultimately, this game mechanic is exactly what makes Dreamscape attractive for kids and why they love playing!
